The Sanctuary is one of the fastest growing churches in San Francisco, California. Founded by Bishop Cedric and Lacey Jones, this growing ministry of 350 members seeks to embrace people of all backgrounds with the message of unconditional love and abundant grace - but how will this mission of love, hope, and grace be received when the message of unconditional love is put to the test? Although Cedric is known to be a charismatic preacher behind the pulpit, he has some internal demons that he struggles to conquer. The nature of his past just won't seem to disappear, and he soon finds himself repeating the same mistakes that he thought he'd overcome. How does Lacey learn to maneuver her way around the challenges confronting her and find hope, restoration, and joy once again? Will she be willing to forsake what she believes God has called her to do, or will she continue to live in the shadows of her deceptive, controlling husband?

The Sanctuary edition by Paulette Harper Literature Fiction eBooks

The Sanctuary by Paulette Harper Johnson portrays a very real account of what happens in relationships. Even more, what happens in the marriages of many couples who are in the ministry. Cedric and Lacey were long time lovers and friends, going all the way back to high school. Blowing off the warnings to heed all signs that were present in her relationship with Cedric, she eventually got far more than she bargained for. A successful business woman and minister in her own right, she could hold her own weight, even while maintaining her role as a wife and co-pastor to her husband. Unprepared for how her increasing responsibilities in the ministry would affect him, Cedric blamed Lacey for all of their problems. Against her fleshly desires to seek solace elsewhere, she gave a valiant effort to keep their marriage intact. An intervention like only those God can do, caused all of the secrets to come to the light and be exposed so others could find their healing as well.

The Sanctuary deals with many issues in a tasteful and non-exploitive way. Paulette does a good job of weaving the struggles and heavy issues we have to face without doing what so many do: brushing it under the rug and acting as if the problems do not exist.

The Sanctuary edition by Paulette Harper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Paulette Harper-Johnson authored an interesting story of Bishop Cedric Jones and his preaching First Lady, Lacey. Like any other ministry couple--or any couple, period--they had their issues, but their issues went deeper than most. Lacey did her best to save her marriage, but it seemed that Cedric was bound and determined to continue down the same path and destroy their marriage. Lacey stayed strong and continued to dodge obstacles and temptations, but then a major crisis took Cedric to the proverbial fork in the road. The ending will surprise you. If you want to read about real life drama, check out The Sanctuary.
I chose this rating due to the storyline. It was intriguing and well written by the author. This was a quick read for me which speaks for itself as a great read. I commend Pastor Lacey on standing strong in her integrity and getting to the place where she was more important than what others thought of her and her husband. It was about being true to God and I know that the favor of God will cause her soul mate to meet her in part II. I am hoping that there is more to this story because there were some questions left lingering in my mind. I recommend this book to anyone who walks in the office of a Pastor or in ministry to see that they are not alone.
What a captivating story by Paulette Harper-Johnson. The Sanctuary literally had me on the edge of my seat waiting to read what was happening next. The characters Bishop Cedi and Pastor Lacey could be seen in anyone's church. The way this story is weaved and leads us through trials, incorrect thoughts of the mind, meddling relatives and even co-workers who have their own ideas about your life parallels those situations people face in every day life, including those who are involved and leaders of their churches. Even though a work of a fiction, I feel as if I know some people who could be those characters. The Sanctuary is a well-written novel, that will keep you wanting more. I'm not a huge fiction reader by any means and I can't wait for the next book. I couldn't put this one down until I had finished. Congratulations to Author Paulette Harper-Johnson. If this is any indication of your first work of fiction, you have many many years ahead of you filled as a fiction writer with best selling books.
Paulette Harper is an author that I plan to keep on my radar now that I have sampled her wares.

I was very impressed with the quality of writing. It was a smooth read. Characters were very well developed and I became invested in them from the very beginning.

As a churchin' woman who has worked in ministry for many years, I recognized church people that I have known in her characters. The storyline was interesting and quite believable. She paced it well and created a great setting.

The protagonist is a prominent First Lady of a popular mega church, a Pastor's wife who is actively engaged in the ministry. She is also an author who owns her own publishing company but all is not what it seems. Their marriage has been in turmoil for a long time and she is very unhappy, though dedicated to the vows she made to her husband.

Her husband, the Bishop is the antagonist in this novel. His refusal to admit to their problems and address his issues are main conflicts in the story. It is a timely topic in the church world today.

A well written novel with an interesting story provided for a good reading experience.

Review

"The Sanctuary" by Paulette Harper-Johnson was a different ride in the life's of Bishop Cedric and Pastor Lacey. When you think of a Bishop and Pastor that are married you generally think here is a pair of outstanding people so in tuned to God's will, however, this was not the case for this couple...for we found much drama from abuse that entered into psychical, verbal as well as emotional. What? As you will see from this read just because you are a minister .... doesn't necessarily make you perfect. We find from the read be prepared to find many trials, 'incorrect thoughts of the minds, meddling mother in law, let's not leave out co-worker(friend) who thought she knew what Pastor Lacy should do with your marriage and less not leave out the involved leaders of the church.' This author did a wonderful job in bringing it all out to the reader and you could tell that she knew first hand about many of the subjects that were presented. This novel is a quick read that will keep you on the edge of your seat only turning the pages until the very end and wanting more from part II. In the end was this a perfect marriage? Well, I will leave that to you to pick up "The Sanctuary" to see for yourself how Pastor Lacy tried to save her marriage and from this 'proverbial fork' in the road...a ending that will truly surprise you. Well done to the author on a well written novel!
